Diomedes was the famed fighter of Argos. At Troy he swung his spear in fear of nothing, not even a god. It was he who wounded Aphrodite during the war.
When the war ended he made for home smoothly enough. He had committed no great crime and seemed to have drawn no anger from the gods. But as Argos came nearer, strange rumors reached him.
They said his wife Aegialeia had taken another man beside her. There was word too that she and that man were planning to be rid of him. Diomedes did not want to believe it, and it was true.
