After Kongming’s death Jiang Wei went north nine times but won no great territory. In Chengdu the eunuch Huang Hao seized the government, and Jiang Wei withdrew to Tazhong to farm and escape danger. Sima Zhao of Wei sends Zhong Hui and Deng Ai to strike at Shu.
Jiang Wei holds off Zhong Hui’s great army at Jiange. Meanwhile Deng Ai takes the side road of Yinping and for more than twenty days crosses over seven hundred li of empty land. At Motian Ridge, where the road ends, Deng Ai wraps himself in a felt blanket and rolls down first. His soldiers follow.
Ma Miao of Jiangyou surrenders without a fight. At Mianzhu, Kongming’s son Zhuge Zhan and grandson Zhuge Shang fight and die. The people of Chengdu flee supporting the old and carrying children, and the sound of their weeping shakes the city.
