Ma Chao, who fought Zhang Fei through the night at Jiameng Pass, comes under Zhang Lu’s suspicion, finds his way home cut off and goes over to Liu Bei. When Ma Chao too arrives below Chengdu, Liu Zhang at last comes out of the city and hands over his seal in Liu Bei’s camp. Liu Bei takes Liu Zhang’s hand and weeps. It is not that I would not act with humanity and righteousness, but the situation left me no choice.

Liu Zhang moves to Gong’an in Nan Commandery and Liu Bei makes himself Governor of Yi Province. The news soon reaches the east of the river. Sun Quan summons Zhang Zhao and Gu Yong. When Liu Bei borrowed Jing Province, he says, he promised to return it once he won the west. Now he holds the forty-one districts of Ba and Shu, so we must have the commanderies along the Han River. If he will not return them, I will move troops.

Zhang Zhao urges restraint. Wu has only just found peace, he says, and this is no time to move troops. The one man Liu Bei relies on is Zhuge Liang, and his elder brother Zhuge Jin serves Wu. Pretend to arrest Zhuge Jin’s family and send him west to plead with his brother. Zhuge Liang will agree for the sake of brotherly feeling. Sun Quan says Zhuge Jin is an honest gentleman and he cannot bear to do it, but Zhang Zhao says he will be at ease if told in advance that it is a ruse.
