Sun Quan sends Zhuge Jin to Jing Province to ask for Guan Yu’s daughter as a wife for his son. Guan Yu is furious. How could I give my tiger of a daughter to the son of a dog? If not for your brother’s face, I would have your head. Hearing the words of the driven-out Zhuge Jin, Sun Quan resolves to join with Cao Cao and attack Jing Province.
On the King of Hanzhong’s orders, Guan Yu makes Fu Shiren and Mi Fang his vanguard. That night the two drink and set their tent on fire, burning weapons and grain. Guan Yu means to behead them, but at Fei Shi’s plea gives each forty strokes of the rod and strips them of the vanguard’s seal. Sending Mi Fang to hold Nan Commandery and Fu Shiren to hold Gong’an, Guan Yu says this. On the day I come back victorious, if there is the slightest fault, I will punish both crimes together.
Guan Yu takes Xiangyang, and Cao Ren falls back to Fan and holds fast. Wang Fu warns that Lu Meng of Wu has designs on Jing Province and urges him to build beacon towers along the river, and to put the loyal Zhao Lei in place of Pan Jun, whom he has left in charge of Jing Province. Guan Yu lets him build the beacon towers but will not listen about Pan Jun, saying the matter is settled and will not be changed. On Cao Ren’s urgent report, Cao Cao makes Yu Jin commander and Pang De vanguard and sends the seven armies.
