The fighting is done. Edward of York is king and sits in London. People have taken off their armour and gone out dancing.
While that goes on, one man walks to the front of the stage. It is Richard, the king’s youngest brother. He looks straight at us and begins.
His first words become the most famous in the play. The winter of his house, he says, has been made a glorious summer by the sun of York. And then he does not stay with the summer for long.
