Telemachus came back by ship from Pylos and Sparta. He had just heard that the suitors lay in wait at sea to destroy him, so on the advice of Athena he went up the mountain road rather than to the harbor.
When he reached the swineherd’s hut Eumaeus ran out to meet him. He took him in his arms as he would a son. “You have come back alive, young master.”
Inside sat an unfamiliar traveler. Telemachus greeted him courteously, and Eumaeus hurried out to carry the news to the mistress.
