On Longevity Mountain there was a temple called Wuzhuang. One tree stood in its courtyard, and it ripened thirty fruits in ten thousand years.
The fruits were shaped like newborn children. They had eyes and noses, hands and feet, and it took three thousand years to flower and three thousand more to bear.
The master, Zhenyuan, was away that day. He left two boys in charge of a guest. “Give two of them to the monk coming from the east.”
