Sinmun was the son of King Munmu.
His father had left a temple half built by the East Sea, and he finished it the year after he became king. It was called Gameunsa, for gratitude toward kindness received.
Munmu had said he would become a dragon of the sea after death and guard the country. So a channel was cut eastward under the main hall for the dragon to come and go, the record says.
