Past the sea of the Sirens the ship rowed on for another day. From far off came spray and the sound of surf together, and a narrow strait lay across their way.
Circe had told him about this strait before they left. On one cliff, she said, lives a monster called Scylla, and on the other side is a whirlpool called Charybdis.
“Hug the Charybdis side and the whole ship disappears. You must keep to the Scylla side and pass quickly.” And then she added. “You will have to give up six.”
